Phil Jackson has zero future as a stand-up comedian. Not if what he said after last night's Lakers loss to the Spurs is any indication of the quality of his material.
During a post-game interview, Zen-master Phil was asked a question about all the penetrating and kicking out to open three-point shooters the Spurs did on his team. Phil replied:
We call this a 'Brokeback Mountain' game, because there's so much penetration and kickouts. It was one of those games.
Oh man, that's hilarious Phil. Almost as hilarious as when Bill Parcells talked about the "Jap plays" he liked to run when he was coaching the Cowboys.
Seriously - when are pro sports people going to figure out that everything they say in interviews is going to be repeated? They're interviews. The point of them is to get you to say things that can then be printed in newspapers or shown on TV. Which have readers and viewers, some of whom are liable to be offended when you make explicit sexual references and/or attack entire ethnic groups.
Weird too, cause I thought Phil Jackson was a smart guy. He did write a book once after all. Granted it was a crappy book. Still, he had to know how to spell words and stuff.
Let's make a deal Phil. You stick to coaching basketball, and let Jay Leno handle the lame humor (when and if the writers' strike ever ends). Okay?
