Nebraska AD Tom Osborne claims he has yet to make a decision concerning the fate of football coach Bill Callahan, who has led the once-mighty Cornhuskers to a piddling 5-6 record this season. Osborne said:
We want to make sure we've had adequate input from everybody. We've got seven or eight days before the Colorado game. That's why it would be foolish to make a decision before all the data is in.
Data? What are you doing Tom, investigating global warming?
Let's face it - Callahan is gone. Everyone knows that. The question is, which poor yutz will get to follow him into that particular meat-grinder? I don't know. All I'm sure of is that, were I a football coach, I wouldn't want the job. Because Nebraska's never going to be what it was before, but the people there will never accept it. It's Nebraska - they don't have anything else. So they obsess over Husker football. Whoever ends up coaching will find out the hard way that just having a solid program isn't enough - you have to win national championships on a semi-regular basis. And kids just don't want to go to Nebraska anymore like they used to. So, it's pretty much impossible to win there like they did in the past.
And it doesn't help having the school's most iconic figure, Osborne, standing right there behind you either. Talk about pressure. I'll bet Callahan wishes Osborne would just get it over with and fire him now.

Interestingly enough, I've heard people saying that Turner Gill is actually in the running for the job. I'm not sure that I buy that since Gill has a 6-16 record at Buffalo. You'd think that there would be a quality Nebraska guy somewhere in the college coaching ranks who could come in there, but there may not be anybody.
