The Heisman Finalist Analyzed

The finalists for the Heisman Trophy have been announced as Dan Zinski pointed out earlier.

Darren McFadden - Arkansas
Tim Tebow - Florida
Chase Daniel - Missouri
Colt Brennan - Hawaii

We have three quarterbacks and one running back. The SEC, Big 12, and WAC are represented with the SEC of course getting two.

First let's look at the lone running back. McFadden ran for 1725 yards and 15 TD's on a 5.7 yards per carry average. He also had 21 receptions for 164 yards and one TD. He tallied this up against 5 ranked teams. I have read some accusing him of running up numbers against lesser opponents.

The reasoning comes from his poor performance (43 yards) against Auburn. To those I say look what he did against South Carolina, Tennessee and LSU where he rolled up 646 yards. He was hurt in the Auburn game and as a result, Arkansas had its poorest offensive showing of the season.

He totaled 16 TD's.

Now for the Quarterbacks.

Chase Daniel from Missouri just led his team to the best season in school history. He posted a QB rating of 105.5 with 4170 yards passing. He also had an impressive 33 TD's against 10 interceptions. Daniel showed his ability to run a spread offense by also running for 284 yards and 4 TD's. He also did this against 5 ranked teams.

He led an offense that scored over 35 points in every game except the two against Oklahoma. Chase is only a junior and his best may be yet to come.

He totaled 37 TD's.

Colt Brennan from Hawaii had an amazing year (albeit somewhat less stellar than last year). He still led a team to an undefeated record on the shoulders of a 112.9 QB rating. He passed for 4174 yards and 38 TD's against just 14 interceptions. He also ran for 8 TD's on just 65 yards.

The hit on Brennan is strength of schedule and June Jones' system. Hawaii played just one ranked team and that was Boise State. In spite of what June Jones says, Hawaii is a system (as is every other team in America) and it is clearly illustrated in pass to run ratio 605-249.

He totaled 46 TD's.

Finally, we have sophomore phenom Tim Tebow from Florida. Although bowl bound, the Gators did not have a great season. Tebow on the other hand did. He amassed 122.9 QB rating with 3132 yards, 34 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions. He also ran for 838 yards and 22 TD's.

The youthful Tebow did this in the SEC against 6 ranked teams. Beyond that, he literally carried the Florida offense single-handedly and they are headed to a bowl.

He totaled 56 TD's.

So, in review, Tebow had the toughest schedule, highest QB rating, and most touchdowns. He will likely, however, not win it because he is a sophomore.

If I were predicting and of course I am; I would say McFadden, Tebow, Brennan and Daniel in that order.

Colt Brennan - 131 touchdow... (Below threshold)
joe:

Colt Brennan - 131 touchdown passes, 23 NCAA records, only undefeated team in America. Who else can say that? How can Colt Brennan not win the Heisman? If you are skeptical, I challenge you to watch last week's Hawaii Vs Washington. Colt is incredible. You might become a believer.

joe:I watched the ... (Below threshold)

joe:

I watched the Hawaii/Washington game, and that is EXACTLY why I'm skeptical. Washington was their toughest opponent (yes, better than Boise St. and Fresno St.), and finished 2-7 in the PAC 10 and 4-9 overall. Hawaii has the worst strength of schedule in Division IA football--119th out of 119 schools.

I also watched his 4 interception game against--wait for it--San Jose State. San Jose St. finished 4-4 in conference and 5-7 overall.

What's my point? He's got those gaudy numbers against inferior competition. That's simply not Heisman worthy. If he has the same kind of success against Georgia, then he'll get some respect. Not until then, though, and rightfully so.
