Update: Bonds Indicted

Barry Bonds has been indicted on federal perjury and obstruction of justice charges. Investigators say Bonds lied when he told a grand jury in 2003 that he did not knowingly take performance enhancing drugs. The indictment reads in part:

During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes.

Something tells me we've seen the last of Barry Bonds as a major league player. And that asterisk is the least of his worries now, isn't it?

Update: Bonds is charged with four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice. The perjury counts each carry a possible 5 year prison sentence and the obstruction of justice count a 10 year sentence.

And we all thought Michael ... (Below threshold)

And we all thought Michael Vick had problems: Bonds is in the cross hairs of not only a Federal prosecutor, but a prosecutor that has the weight and influence of a former Senate Majority Leader behind him.

Asterisk, my ass!H... (Below threshold)

Asterisk, my ass!

His records, along with those of McGwire, Sosa, Palmiero, and anyone else known/admitted to use drugs illegally to enhance performance, ought be stricken from the books.

The lax treatment of performance-enhancing drugs is a stain on the game far worse than Willie Mays' job as a casino "greeter," or Pete Rose's bets on baseball as a manager, or even than Joe Jackson's alleged "throwing" of a World Series (given his actual performance in the games).
